The Office of Professional Development and Faculty Affairs (PDFA) is pleased to offer 35-50 programs each academic year. Faculty members can develop and enhance their skills as teachers, clinicians, researchers, leaders in academic medical education, and writers, as well as skills critical to the success with mentoring experiences and their own career development.
WORKSHOPS
PDFA Training workshops are offered predominately over the noon hour (noon – 1:00 p.m.); require pre-registration; Continuing Education is available at not cost for most events. EEDS registration “swipe cards” are used for easy registration.

LEADERSHIP SKILLS
- Leadership Series - Campus Wide
This is a monthly series of 5 lecture/lunch presentations beginning in January open to any employee on the KUMC campus. The theme is "Stories of Leaders: How They Do or Did It" offering speakers and panels of presenters from across our KUMC campus, from the Kansas City area or nationally. For those unable to attend, videos are available.
- Faculty Leadership Academy (FLA) - for Faculty Only
The Faculty Leadership Academy (FLA) is a joint effort of the University of Kansas School of Medicine and the University of Kansas Hospital to help improve the management and leadership skills of physician and basic science faculty members. Application to the program is required.
MENTORING INITIATIVE – PRESENTATION & NETWORKING LUNCH SERIES
- Networking sessions offers an opportunity for junior faculty mentees and senior faculty mentors to enjoy lunch together, share and learn from each other, and participate in a 20 minute presentation/discussion on related mentoring topics. Look for topics under the Mentoring Category on PDFA Training

- Supertrax: Leadership in Action
These are leadership and management classes offered for credit through KUMC Human Resources.
- Society for Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (SELAM)
This Program is geared toward senior faculty in academic health centers and related organizations, members of the Society for Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine, and those interested in the advancement of women in academic health.
- Executive Leadership in American Medicine (ELAM)
ELAM is one of the premier programs in the country designed to promote the advancement of women in academic medicine. Consisting of three one- week, off- site segments coupled with a project of the candidate’s choice, this course is open to women at the level of Associate Professor and higher on a competitive basis.

WRITING SKILLS FOR ACADEMIC MEDICINE
- Writing Workshop Series
1st Wednesday lecture/lunch series is offered in collaboration between PDFA and the Writing Consult Center. This series provides both local and outside guest presenters on topics of writing skills such as educational scholarship, improving your own writing skills for use with publishing and teaching, writing letters of recommendation, how to write reviews and more. Fall sessions are basic topics and the spring are more advanced programs. (Past Events)
